The Opportunity
The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on builder within the product-led Software Engineering team in Abbott’s cancer diagnostics division, focused on Digital Engineering and Integrations. This team owns the customer-facing portals that serve patients, providers, and payers, along with the integrations that power them. You will design, build, and run secure, reliable, full-stack services on AWS, working in a squad that owns its product end to end. You will write high-quality code, strengthen how we build, and help the engineers around you grow.
We are looking for someone who builds with the full lifecycle in mind: thoughtful design, solid testing, and real responsibility for how services run once they are live. The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator who listens before they lead, shares what they know generously, and brings people along when change is needed.
What You’ll Work On
Design and build RESTful and GraphQL APIs, services, and event-driven integrations using Java, Spring Boot, and messaging platforms such as Kafka, with attention to versioning, error handling, and idempotency.
Contribute to front-end work, building responsive, accessible user interfaces using Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, HTML, and CSS.
Treat performance, availability, observability, security, and compliance requirements as first-class parts of every design, not afterthoughts.
Write and automate unit and integration tests that give the team confidence to ship often.
Deploy and operate services on AWS using containers and infrastructure as code, supported by GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
Apply sound architectural patterns, such as hexagonal and layered architecture, to keep services clear, testable, and easy to change.
Contribute to design discussions and code reviews, mentor engineers earlier in their careers, and help raise the quality bar across the squad.
Partner with product, UX, QE, and other engineering teams in an Agile environment to deliver features that serve our portal users.
Help scale our portals for international growth in a distributed architecture that spans multiple geographic locations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
8+ years of related software engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience designing, building, and supporting distributed microservices in production using Java or a comparable object-oriented language, a framework such as Spring Boot, and RESTful or GraphQL APIs, including event-driven integrations with messaging platforms such as Kafka.
Experience building and running services on a major cloud platform such as AWS or Azure.
Strong SQL and relational database skills, including data modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning.
Experience writing automated unit and integration tests, and working with Git, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, including the ability to investigate complex issues across application services, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and independently own technical deliverables from design through production deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building user interfaces with Angular, TypeScript, and RxJS, with a solid grounding in HTML, CSS, and accessibility basics, and with state management (NgRx) or micro-frontend approaches.
Experience with AI-assisted software engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or equivalent solutions.
Experience with AWS services such as EKS/ECS, S3, RDS, Lambda, and IAM.
Experience with Terraform or Kubernetes.
Experience with NoSQL databases.
Experience securing APIs using Spring Security and OAuth 2/OIDC.
Experience working in a regulated industry (such as healthcare or life sciences).
