Job description

At Expedia Group, we help travelers explore the world, one journey at a time. As a global travel company powered by passionate people, trusted partnerships, and leading technology, we connect travelers, partners, and advertisers through our consumer brands, B2B network, and travel advertising business. Here, you'll do meaningful work that helps millions of people discover, book, and experience travel with more ease, confidence, and joy. Our five Behaviors-Traveler First, Think Big, Operate with Excellence, Ownership Mindset, and Succeed Together-help foster a supportive environment where people can grow their careers and have the flexibility, benefits, and support to do their best work. Join us and build for travelers everywhere. As an SDE III, you will take ownership of complex engineering work from design through production, raise the quality of the systems around you, and help the team make sound technical decisions. You will partner with product managers, designers, and engineers in a global, agile team to deliver improvements that make shopping and purchasing travel simpler and more dependable. What you’ll do Design, develop, test, and operate full-stack software, producing clean, maintainable, secure, and performant code. Deliver features across web applications and backend services, including APIs and integrations, using appropriate architectural patterns. Own complex projects from technical design and estimation through implementation, rollout, monitoring, and ongoing support. Improve service availability, resilience, performance, and observability; identify and address reliability risks before they affect travellers. Investigate and resolve production and non-production issues, participate in operational reviews, and turn learnings into durable improvements. Work with product and design partners to shape technical approaches, clarify requirements, and break roadmap goals into deliverable increments. Review code and designs, provide constructive technical guidance, and mentor engineers to strengthen engineering practices across the team. Collaborate with cross-functional and globally distributed teams to deliver high-quality outcomes on time. Contribute to a definition of done that includes automated tests, peer review, integration validation, and safe production deployment. Promote a culture of continuous improvement in software quality, delivery, and support. What you bring Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience delivering production software across frontend and backend systems. Proficiency in a JVM language such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala, and experience building web services with frameworks such as Spring; or comparable backend experience with Node.js and Express. Experience building modern web applications with JavaScript or TypeScript and a framework such as React (including Redux or similar state-management tools), Angular, or an equivalent framework. Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with data stores, distributed systems, and service integrations. A track record of owning complex technical work, making practical design tradeoffs, and delivering maintainable solutions. Experience with automated testing at multiple levels, code review, continuous integration, and incremental delivery. Familiarity with JavaScript quality and testing tools such as ESLint, Jest, Mocha, Selenium, or equivalent tools. Experience with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins, TeamCity, or comparable tools. Understanding of production operations, including monitoring, logging, troubleshooting, and reliability practices. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a calm, collaborative approach to resolving challenging issues. Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly, influence peers, and help other engineers grow. A self-directed, adaptable mindset and enthusiasm for learning and improving how the team works. Minimum qualifications Professional experience in software development or engineering, with demonstrated ownership of production systems and contributions across the full stack. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. The total cash range for this position in Chicago is $136,000.00 to $190,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $217,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role. Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
