Job description
Investment Banking Division
Morgan Stanley’s Investment Banking Division (IBD) provides industry, regional and product expertise to corporations, institutions and government clients in order to advise our clients on strategic and financing matters. These solutions include initial public offerings; public and private equity and equity-linked financings; mergers, acquisitions and restructurings; defense advisory assignments; strategic partnerships; public and private debt placements; share repurchases; hedging, swaps and derivative transactions.
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on engineer to combine quantitative analysis, software development and applied AI to solve high-impact problems across Morgan Stanley's Investment Banking Division.
As an IBD Strategist, you will be embedded with bankers and work alongside other Strats and senior management to build solutions that improve productivity, support revenue generation and reduce risk globally.
You will help shape both what we build and how we build it: developing AI-native applications while contributing to the team's adoption of AI-assisted software development.
This role suits engineers and quantitative developers who enjoy building with AI and are curious about finance. Prior investment banking experience is welcome, not required.
What You’ll Do
Turn banker needs into products.
Work with bankers and management across industry, regional and product teams to identify valuable opportunities and translate ambiguous requirements into clear specifications. Own delivery from prototype through production and adoption.
Build complete banking applications.
Develop end-to-end solutions that bring together data, quantitative analysis and user-facing functionality. Embed AI capabilities where they improve research, analysis or other banking workflows.
Deliver rigorous quantitative analysis.
Build models, analytical tools and dashboards supporting valuation, comparable company analysis, precedent transactions, financial projections and client strategies. Own the underlying data sourcing, architecture and pipelines. Keep financial calculations explicit, testable and reproducible.
Accelerate software delivery with AI.
Use and coordinate AI coding tools and agents to implement, test, debug and refactor software. Break work into clear tasks, manage context efficiently and review generated code, retaining responsibility for architecture, correctness and maintainability.
Help contribute to team-wide adoption.
Develop reusable tools and working practices that help the team build better software, faster. Share effective approaches and measure improvements in delivery time, software quality and banker productivity.
Build for trust and reliability.
Test software and analytical outputs, handle errors thoughtfully and protect confidential information. Use approved tools and maintain appropriate access controls and review processes.
Own outcomes and communicate clearly.
Explain analytical results, project progress and technical trade-offs to bankers and senior leadership. Develop expertise in investment banking processes and financial products, and use feedback to improve solutions and identify new opportunities.
What We’re Looking For
Strong software engineering fundamentals.
Proficiency in Python and SQL, familiarity with SQL/NoSQL databases and APIs, and the ability to design, test, debug and maintain reliable software, including AI-generated code.
Quantitative reasoning and curiosity about finance.
Strong mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to translate analytical ideas into accurate code. Interest in valuation, capital structure and M&A, and motivation to learn investment banking workflows.
Practical application development with AI.
Ability to use AI tools to build a complete, working application, from initial requirements through implementation, testing and debugging. You should be able to explain your design choices and understand the code you deliver.
Practical AI fluency.
Working knowledge of prompts, context and tokens, with practical judgment about providing relevant information, managing token usage and checking outputs.
Ownership and collaboration.
Clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, an ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, and enthusiasm for helping colleagues adopt better ways of working.
Relevant education.
A bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or another quantitative field, or Finance/Economics with software development experience.
