Job Description: Summary: A developing-level database infrastructure and data engineering team member who supports multi-technology database platforms across project delivery and day-to-day operations. The Data Engineer 1 contributes to the design, provisioning, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance, and documentation of database infrastructure, working under the guidance of senior engineers and platform specialists. The role supports a broad technology landscape, including Elasticsearch, AWS Managed Databases, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and related cloud database services. They participate as a supporting player on complex infrastructure and database projects, follow established operational practices, seek guidance when needed, and are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions and respectfully challenge the status quo. Role Expectations Project delivery Supports database infrastructure projects from requirements and design through build, testing, go-live, handover, and decommissioning Helps gather workload, capacity, availability, recovery, security, networking, and support requirements Assists with provisioning and configuration of Elasticsearch, AWS Managed Databases, MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and related services Follows approved patterns for naming, tagging, sizing, topology, access, encryption, backups, monitoring, and alerting Supports migration, upgrade, patching, scaling, replication, and cutover activities with appropriate supervision Performs validation and testing before production release, including connectivity, functionality, performance, backup, restore, and failover checks Maintains accurate project documentation, architecture details, implementation notes, known issues, and operational handover information Identifies gaps in monitoring, alerting, runbooks, access, backup, recovery, and support readiness before go-live Day-to-day operations Performs routine database and cluster health checks across supported technologies and environments Reviews dashboards, alerts, logs, capacity indicators, backup status, replication health, and service events Participates in incident triage, troubleshooting, escalation, incident bridges, and post-incident follow-up Uses approved runbooks and change processes for configuration changes, maintenance, patching, scaling, failover, and recovery activities Starts with read-only investigation, verifies the target environment, and seeks peer confirmation before production-impacting actions Helps diagnose common operational issues such as connectivity failures, high latency, slow queries, lock contention, replication lag, cluster imbalance, shard or partition pressure, cache eviction, and storage capacity risk Captures timelines, evidence, hypotheses, actions, validation results, and outstanding follow-ups clearly in the appropriate support record Updates operational documentation when procedures, platform behavior, ownership, dashboards, or escalation paths change Escalates early when customer impact is high, the issue is outside the documented procedure, or a proposed action has material risk Collaboration and growth Collaborates with team members to co-develop solutions and solve infrastructure and database problems Proactively connects with peers across environments and technology teams to learn, coordinate, and resolve issues Seeks support from subject matter experts and senior engineers when the problem exceeds their current experience Participates in code reviews, design discussions, incident reviews, and project ceremonies Takes advantage of opportunities to build deeper expertise in one or more database technologies while maintaining awareness of the broader platform landscape Understands the importance of system and technology integration across databases, applications, networks, cloud services, monitoring, and security controls Builds familiarity with highly available, distributed systems used for data storage, retrieval, caching, search, extraction, ingestion, and processing Applies software design principles, data structures, algorithms, and computer science fundamentals to day-to-day engineering and automation work Executes tasks and provides data or technical inputs that support holistic solutions across people, process, technology, and platform architecture Learns when policies and processes are standardized and when they differ across teams, environments, technologies, and operational scenarios Maintains awareness of advancements and changes in data engineering, database technologies, cloud platforms, data models, enterprise information management, business intelligence, and data science Reports work status, risks, dependencies, and blockers clearly and on time Asks thoughtful and challenging questions when empowered to do so Feels comfortable respectfully challenging assumptions, authority, or the status quo when there is a clear technical or operational rationale Accommodation requests Expedia Group is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruiting experience.
