Job Description What you’ll be doing... The Verizon Network Security team is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Network Security Engineer I to join our Network Security Defense organization. The Defense teams are responsible for owning the security lifecycle and effectiveness across the Core, Edge, and Access networks, as well as all other systems and network functions within Verizon. In this role, you will focus on Broadband Access while gaining hands-on exposure to network asset discovery, security monitoring, vulnerability management, and modern AI-driven security tools. Working alongside senior engineers, you will apply foundational networking, security, and programming concepts (Python, Java, etc.) to help safeguard critical network assets, automate routine tasks, and support the implementation of our Network Security Fundamentals (Access Management, Situational Awareness, Configuration Hardening, and Vulnerability Mitigation). This position offers a strong foundation for launching a career at the intersection of network security, automation, and AI technology. Assist in discovering, cataloging, and maintaining the inventory of network assets and metadata (hardware models, firmware/software versions, OS details). Support senior team members in auditing network assets to help identify End-of-Life/End-of-Support systems and emerging vulnerabilities. Help monitor normal network operational baselines and learn to utilize threat detection tools—including AI-driven analysis tools—to identify potential security anomalies. Write, maintain, and execute basic automation scripts and programs (in Python, Java, or Shell) to streamline security scans, log analysis, reporting, and routine operational workflows. Leverage SIEM tools like SPLUNK for threat modeling, assist with investigation and analysis Leverage modern generative AI tools and AI-assisted platforms to accelerate troubleshooting, documentation, code analysis, and query building Assist with the documentation and execution of incident response procedures for network security alerts and threats. Learn and apply the organization's Network Security Fundamentals to support continuous improvement of our overall security posture. Contribute data and tracking metrics to support the team’s network security scorecard and compliance visibility. Where you'll be working... In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days in the office. What we’re looking for... You'll need to have: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field (or equivalent hands-on experience, coursework, or military training). Foundational understanding of core networking principles (TCP/IP, routing, switching, subnets, and the OSI model). Hands-on programming and scripting knowledge in Python, Java , Bash, or C/C++ gained through coursework, projects, or personal labs. Basic familiarity with AI tools and AI fundamentals (e.g., prompt engineering, generative AI assistants, or basic machine learning concepts) and an interest in applying them to security and software engineering workflows. Strong desire to learn network defense, threat monitoring, security automation, and infrastructure protection. Even better if you have one or more of the following: Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to work in a team environment. Where you’ll be working In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes working from home and a minimum of three days per week in the office, which will be set by your manager. The salary will vary depending on your location and confirmed job-related skills and experience. This is an incentive based position with the potential to earn more. For part-time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours. The annual salary range for the location(s) listed on this job requisition based on a full-time schedule is: $71,000.00 - $116,000.00.
