Position Overview
SUMMARY (Basic Purpose of the Job)
The AI Architect defines and evolves Capital Health's enterprise artificial intelligence architecture, technical standards, reusable patterns, and platform strategy. This senior hands-on architecture role
establishes
how AI capabilities are securely and consistently designed, integrated, evaluated, deployed,
monitored
, and governed across internally developed products and enterprise workflows. The AI Architect provides technical direction for large language models, agentic systems, retrieval-augmented generation, enterprise knowledge, model and provider integration, tool orchestration, identity and access, voice and conversational AI, observability, evaluations, guardrails, human oversight, and AI platform services. The role partners with AI Engineers, Product Developers, Product Engineers, the Data Architect, Data Engineers, Security, Infrastructure, Clinical and Business Applications, Compliance, Privacy, and operational leadership to create reusable enterprise capabilities rather than isolated one-off AI implementations. The AI Architect
remains
technically hands-on and is expected to create reference implementations, lead architecture reviews, solve complex engineering problems, and guide AI Engineers while preserving
appropriate architectural
flexibility as the technology evolves.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Bachelor's or
Master's degree in Computer Science
, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and highly relevant architecture and engineering experience.
Experience:
Demonstrated extensive experience designing and delivering enterprise software, cloud, data, machine learning, generative AI, or agentic systems, including responsibility for architecture decisions that span multiple products or teams. Must
demonstrate
strong hands-on engineering depth, experience
establishing
reusable technical standards, and the ability to guide complex production implementations. Experience in healthcare, regulated environments, or
sensitive-data
architectures is strongly preferred.
Other Credentials:
Advanced architecture, cloud, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data, or security certifications are preferred but not
required
. Relevant examples may include cloud solution architect, AI engineer, data architect, security, or enterprise architecture credentials.
Knowledge and Skills:
Expert knowledge of enterprise AI architecture and modern software engineering, including LLM and model integration, model gateways, agent frameworks, tool/function calling, RAG and enterprise knowledge architectures, embeddings/vector search, context and state management, evaluation frameworks, observability, guardrails, human-in-the-loop design, identity and authorization, API architecture, cloud platforms, CI/CD, secure deployment, performance, resilience, and cost management. Strong understanding of privacy, security, data governance, responsible AI, healthcare interoperability, and integration with EHR and enterprise systems. Ability to create reference architectures, evaluate emerging technologies, communicate complex tradeoffs, and influence technical direction across organizational boundaries.
Special Training:
Advanced training in AI architecture, cloud architecture, generative AI and agentic systems, responsible AI, AI security, evaluation/red teaming, enterprise integration, healthcare interoperability, or related disciplines is preferred.
Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities:
Ability to think strategically and systemically while remaining technically hands-on; make high-impact architecture decisions under uncertainty; balance standardization with innovation; influence senior technical and business stakeholders; communicate complex concepts clearly; mentor engineers; identify enterprise risks early; and maintain strong judgment regarding privacy, security, patient safety, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

Reporting Relationships
Does this position formally supervise employees? No. The AI Architect is a senior individual contributor and enterprise technical authority for AI architecture. The role provides architecture direction, technical standards, design review, mentoring, and guidance to AI Engineers and collaborates closely with the Director of Product Engineering and AI, Product Development leadership, the Data Architect, Security, Infrastructure, Data Engineering, Product Engineering, Clinical and Business Applications, Compliance, Privacy, and other enterprise stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Defines and
maintains
the enterprise AI architecture strategy, reference architectures, technical standards, and reusable implementation patterns.
Establishes architectural patterns for LLM integration, model/provider abstraction, model gateways, agent orchestration, tool/function calling, context management, memory/state, RAG, enterprise knowledge, and structured outputs.
Defines how AI applications securely authenticate, authorize, retrieve data, and perform approved actions across EHR-related services, enterprise applications, APIs, identity platforms, and workflow systems.
Establishes enterprise standards for AI evaluations, testing, release readiness, regression testing, red teaming, monitoring, observability, and continuous quality measurement.
Defines architecture patterns for guardrails, least-privilege tool access,
sensitive-data
protection, audit logging, human oversight, fallback behavior, escalation, and safe failure modes.
Creates architecture standards for voice and conversational AI, including speech services, real-time orchestration, latency, interruption handling, context continuity, call transfer/escalation, and integration with enterprise telephony and contact-center platforms.
Partners with the Data Architect and Data Engineering teams to define AI-ready data and knowledge architecture, including source authority, metadata, lineage, retrieval patterns, vector stores, semantic layers, and data quality expectations.
Evaluates AI models, providers, platforms, frameworks, and emerging technologies and recommends enterprise adoption based on capability, security, privacy, interoperability, performance, cost, supportability, and vendor portability.
Promotes model and vendor portability by defining interfaces and patterns that reduce unnecessary dependence on a single AI provider where practical.
Designs shared AI platform capabilities and reusable services that can support multiple products, agents, departments, and use cases.
Creates hands-on prototypes and reference implementations to validate architecture decisions and provide implementation examples for engineering teams.
Leads AI architecture and design reviews for major products and high-risk use cases and documents significant technical decisions and tradeoffs.
Partners with AI Engineer III staff on complex implementations and ensures enterprise standards are practical, testable, and maintainable in production.
Partners with Product Engineering and operational leaders to assess technical feasibility,
identify
reusable capabilities, and translate enterprise needs into architecture roadmaps.
Partners with Security, Privacy, Compliance, and responsible AI governance functions to embed required controls into architecture rather than treating governance as a post-development activity.
Defines principles for AI observability, telemetry, usage measurement, cost allocation, capacity planning, performance, resilience, and production support.
Guides technical approaches for AI incident response, root-cause analysis, rollback/fallback, model or provider outages, data-source failures, and other production risks.
Mentors AI Engineers and Product Developers, reviews complex technical designs, and raises enterprise AI engineering maturity through standards, education, and reusable patterns.
Maintains an enterprise AI technology roadmap and periodically reassesses architecture decisions as models, platforms, regulations, security requirements, and organizational needs
evolve
.
Performs other duties as assigned.
