What we are looking for
Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all.
We are searching for a Senior Software Engineer - Aurora Services to join our team. The Aurora Services team sits at the core of Aurora's mission to scale safe autonomous driving. As we scale from operating a small fleet of vehicles to hundreds and thousands on the road, we build the core command-and-control software, real-time operator interfaces, and data tracking tools that enable seamless commercial fleet operations.
In this role you will
- Own substantial full-stack software components and drive technical projects from ambiguous, high-level goals into fully defined, production-ready systems.
- Play a key role in the design and evolution of the team's software products, APIs, and data pipelines to support real-time fleet operations and operator workflows.
- Balance tradeoffs between short-term MVPs and scalable long-term software design, coordinating dependencies and work estimates to deliver critical operational functionality smoothly.
- Establish and guide team best practices for code quality, testing, performance optimization, and documentation, actively participating in code reviews and architecture discussions.
- Serve as a primary point of contact and subject matter expert for core team components, consulting with interdisciplinary teams across operations, autonomy, and cloud infrastructure to align on deliverables.
- Identify bottlenecks in existing systems and independently drive meaningful improvements to overall code quality, performance, and system reliability.
- Advocate for new technologies or shared infrastructure across the company and help integrate them into the team's stack while onboarding and advising peers.
Required qualifications
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of industry experience in software development, with a proven track record of owning and delivering key deliverables within large-scale full-stack systems.
- Hands-on proficiency across the full software lifecycle, combining core systems and architectural foundations with modern client-facing applications and data storage solutions.
- Experience designing, refactoring, and maintaining REST/gRPC APIs and microservices.
- Demonstrated ability to take ambiguous requirements, break them down into actionable technical plans, and execute independently.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills, with experience advising interdisciplinary partners and translating operational requirements into clean software abstractions.
Desirable qualifications
- Prior experience in real-time distributed systems, fleet management platforms, command-and-control software, or logistics/iot tracking.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and deployment tooling (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Docker).
- Exposure to onboard vehicle software or C++ codebases.
For roles based in Pittsburgh, PA: The salary range for this position is $146,000 - $234,000 per year.
Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
